Help!

Without going overboard on this one, this week contained a leap into the unknown world of running. “All at sea”, with teammates as a lifebuoy! The team can run. The session contained short intervals of varying distance with reasonable recovery periods. I survived. And this morning, no noticeable stiffness.

Now for the swim.

This was a whole new experience. One day missed swimming and I couldn’t feel the water – very odd, a week normally contains a rest day without any ill effect – and then I wasn’t sure what was happening to my legs. It was only after a couple of lengths kick that it became apparent quite how stiff the muscles were. I’ve often noticed triathletes training with pullbuoys, but hadn’t realised quite what it meant to have “heavy legs”. Buoyancy is not normally an issue, as athletic proportions disappeared with youth, so this whole new experience threw me a little off balance. I hope this gets a little easier as I’m a little concerned that by learning how to run, I’ll forget how to swim – then it will be back to the beginning again – floats, kick, drills, breathing, timing…
